π Chasselas
A white grape from the shores of Lake Geneva; Switzerland's main variety, also grown as a table grape.
Chasselas is a white grape from the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. It is the countryβs main white variety. In Switzerland, Chasselas wine is made mostly in the cantons of Vaud and Valais, where in Valais it is called Fendant. The grape is also grown in Alsace in France, in Baden in Germany and elsewhere.
Chasselas is a very old variety, grown both for wine and as a table grape. The berries are juicy and sweet and can be eaten fresh. The wine is neutral, delicate and light, with low acidity and aromas of flowers, almond and mild citrus. It expresses the soil it grew on well, so wines from different places differ noticeably.
The Swiss drink it young and chilled, with cheese such as fondue, and with lake fish. The best vineyards lie on the terraces of Lavaux above Lake Geneva.
Chasselas is a parent of many other varieties, including Muscat Ottonel. It belongs to Swiss wine as a whole. Alcohol is for adults.
