Milk proteins for muscle growth.

Muscles are the body tissues that contract to move it, built largely from protein. Muscles are built from protein. To grow and recover after exercise, the body needs protein from food. 100 ml of cow's milk has about 3.2–3.5 g of protein. A glass has about 8 g. Sheep's milk has even more protein, about 5.6 g per 100 ml.

Milk protein comes in two kinds. About 80% is casein. In the stomach it clots into a firm curd. About 20% is whey protein. It stays liquid and is often drunk after a workout. Protein powders for sports nutrition are made from milk. But these proteins are also found in ordinary foods: milk, cottage cheese, yogurt and cheese.

Protein on its own does not build muscle. Muscles grow from exercise, and protein helps them recover. A 2010 EFSA review concluded that whey protein works for strength and muscle about as well as other good protein sources. An ordinary person who eats a varied diet usually does not need special powders.
