An eastern zone near the Bulgarian border.

Pčinja-Osogovo is a wine area in the east of North Macedonia, near the Bulgarian border. It is part of Macedonian winemaking. The area includes the zones of Kumanovo, Kratovo, Kočani-Vinica and Pijanec, named after towns and valleys.

The relief is mountainous: the Osogovo mountains and the valley of the Pčinja river. The climate is continental, with hot summers but cool nights. The area is smaller than the southern Povardarie, where most Macedonian vineyards are concentrated, and less well known.

Both international and traditional grapes are grown. The characteristic white grape is Dimyat, an old Balkan variety giving light, soft wines with floral aromas. Around Kočani the valley has long been known for rice as well as grapes.

For visitors, Pčinja-Osogovo is interesting for small family wineries and village cellars. Wine here has often been made for local use, though the number of bottled wines has been growing in recent years. For comparison, the southern Povardarie around the Vardar river gives most of the country's wine, while Pčinja-Osogovo remains a quieter, little-known side of Macedonian winemaking, interesting for travellers. On Macedonian labels, look for the name of the wine region: it helps to tell Pčinja-Osogovo wines from the better-known wines of the Vardar valley.
