🗺️ Macedonian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grape varieties, appellations.
Macedonian wine is the wine of North Macedonia, a small country in the Balkans. Grapes have been grown here for a very long time: warm summers and plenty of sun suit the vine. The country is divided into three wine regions: Povardarie, Pčinja-Osogovo and Pelagonia-Polog.
The largest region is the valley of the Vardar river, that is Povardarie. About 85% of the country's vineyards lie there, including the well-known Tikveš area. Among local varieties the best known red is Vranec, and many white varieties grow too, including international ones. There is also a variety of its own, Stanushina, found in these areas.
Besides wine, the country makes grape rakija, a strong spirit from pomace. Macedonian wine belongs to the wines of Europe. Part of the wine is sold to neighbouring countries. Information on designations and varieties in the country keeps being refined, so it is worth reading the district name on the label. The origin of a wine is easiest to check by it.
