📍 Pelagonija-Polog
The cool western zone around Ohrid, Prespa and Bitola.
Pelagonija-Polog is a wine area in the west of North Macedonia. It covers valleys and lakes around the towns of Prilep, Bitola, Ohrid, Kičevo and Tetovo, as well as the Prespa area. It is cooler here than in the country's main wine area, Povardarie, because the land lies higher above sea level.
Lakes, in particular Ohrid and Prespa, soften the climate. Both local and international grapes are grown here. The cool climate suits white wines such as Riesling. Red varieties are also grown, and the wine is lighter and fresher than in the south of the country.
Pelagonija-Polog is part of Macedonian wine and has the status of a national geographical indication. Although the area is less known than the Vardar valley, it is valued for fresh wines and beautiful scenery. Lakes, mountains and old monasteries lie nearby. For wine tourism it is a little-known but interesting destination.
