🍇 Pinot Noir Précoce
An early-ripening mutation of Pinot Noir, known in Germany as Frühburgunder.
Pinot Noir Précoce is an early-ripening mutation of Pinot Noir. A mutation is a chance change in a vine that became fixed. This variety ripens earlier than ordinary Pinot Noir, so it suits cooler places. In France it is known as Pinot Noir Précoce, and in Germany it is called Frühburgunder.
Its wines are usually pale and soft, smelling of red berries and cherry. In Germany the variety is valued in the Ahr, and also in Rheinhessen and the Pfalz. It is liked there for its elegant style and moderate tannins.
Pinot Noir Précoce is a parent of several German varieties. One of them is Helfensteiner, obtained by crossing it with another variety. The variety is counted as French, although in modern winemaking it is especially tied to German regions. For red wine fans it is a way to meet a delicate style of Pinot Noir.
