π₯ Royal Stag
Seagram's Royal Stag is an Indian whisky brand owned by Pernod Ricard; launched in 1995; grain spirit and Scotch malts; Deluxe 40% ABV, Barrel Select 43%.
Royal Stag, in full Seagram's Royal Stag, is an Indian whisky brand that Pernod Ricard has owned since 2001. It was launched in 1995, and according to the company it became the world's biggest whisky brand by sales volume in 2025. The base, according to the producer, is neutral grain spirit, a concentrate of Scotch malt whiskies and water.
History. Pernod Ricard says Royal Stag appeared in India in 1995 as the country's first whisky without artificial flavourings. The brand grew steadily: the company mentions milestones of 10 and 18.5 million cases. According to IWSR, about 32.6 million nine-litre cases were sold in 2025, 5% more than a year earlier. Royal Stag overtook McDowell's to become the biggest Indian whisky brand by sales.
How it is made. The producer's page lists the same ingredients for every version: demineralised water, neutral grain spirit and a concentrate of Scotch malt whiskies. Barrel Select, in Pernod Ricard's words, is a blend of imported Scotch malt whiskies and Indian grain spirits matured in oak barrels. It is produced at several sites, both company-owned and partner-run.
Range. The stag in the logo explains the name: a stag is a male deer. Deluxe is 40% ABV and Barrel Select is 43%. There is also Double Dark, which Spirits Business describes as a peated blend.
Why this matters to you. Indian "whisky" and Scotch whisky are governed by different rules. Under EU Regulation 2019/787, whisky is a grain distillate aged for at least three years in oak, and a composition of neutral spirit and malt-whisky concentrate does not automatically fall into that category. So read the label of the country where you buy it. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
