π₯ Indian whisky
Whisky made in India; the FSSAI definition allows neutral or rectified spirit, while EU whisky must be distilled from malted cereals, matured 3 years and have no added alcohol.
Indian whisky is whisky made in India. Indian law and EU law define whisky differently, so the same word on a label can describe different drinks.
India. Under the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018 of the FSSAI, whisky is an alcoholic beverage made by distilling the fermented extract of malted cereal grains such as corn, rye or barley, or using neutral grain spirit, rectified grain spirit or neutral spirit of agricultural origin, or a mixture of these. Malt or grain whisky is a distillate of a fermented mash of malted or unmalted cereals. Blended malt or blended grain whisky is a mixture of at least 2 per cent malt or grain whisky with neutral or rectified spirit. Single malt whisky is made in a single distillery in a pot still only; after the 2023 amendment it must come from malted barley without any other grain.
EU. Regulation (EU) 2019/787, Annex I, category 2, reserves the name whisky for a spirit distilled from a mash of malted cereals below 94.8% ABV and matured at least three years in wooden casks of up to 700 litres, with at least 40% ABV. No alcohol may be added, and the drink may not be sweetened or flavoured. The words single malt are allowed only for whisky distilled exclusively from malted barley at a single distillery.
Why this matters to you. Read the label for the category (single malt, blended malt, blended grain) and for the ingredients. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
