Royal Challenge, or RC for short, is an Indian whisky brand launched in the early 1980s. It is now made by United Spirits, the Indian subsidiary of Diageo. According to Diageo India, more than 4.5 million nine-litre cases are sold each year, and the blend is described as a mix of Scotch, Indian malt and grain spirits.
History. The brand was created by Shaw Wallace; United Spirits bought it in 2005, and in 2008 Shaw Wallace merged into it. United Spirits later came under Diageo's control. According to Diageo India, Royal Challenge was the first brand in the 'mid-prestige' segment to reach one million cases, and in 2011 it won gold as the best Indian whisky at the International Whisky Competition.
How it is made. The producer says the whisky matures in charred American oak casks. The company does not disclose the share of Scotch whisky in the blend.
Regulator. In August 2026, according to Reuters, the Indian regulator FSSAI banned sales of Royal Challenge made in Madhya Pradesh, citing allegedly artificial flavourings instead of proper maturation. In a separate notice, FSSAI called the phrase 'matured in American oak casks' misleading, because in the regulator's view most of the product is not aged in wood. Diageo India said it is working with FSSAI on labelling.
Why it matters to you. Indian 'whisky' follows different rules from Scotch. Under EU Regulation 2019/787, whisky must be aged at least 3 years in wooden casks, so a blend with neutral spirit does not automatically fall into that category. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
