π Rubired
A 1938 Californian teinturier grape by Harold Olmo with very dark juice.
Rubired is a dark grape variety from California, bred in 1938 by the breeder Harold Olmo. It is a teinturier: its juice is very dark, not only its skin. It was created to give wine and juice a deep colour.
The variety came from crossing Tinta CΓ£o and Alicante Ganzin. Both parents are also dark. The vine is productive and grows well in a hot climate. Wines from Rubired alone are usually simple, and it is valued for its colour, which is added to blends with paler varieties. It is used for juices and for sweet fortified wines, including the port-style type made in California.
Rubired is tied to fortified wines and belongs to a large family of Californian varieties produced at Fresno and Davis. Among its relatives the VIVC database names Fresno, Dunstan 210, Autumn Black and others. Breeding of this kind aims at practicality: colour, yield and resistance to heat.
