🍇 Tinta Cão
A red grape from the Douro Valley, Portugal, one of the Port varieties.
Tinta Cão is a red grape from the Douro valley in Portugal. It is one of the grapes used to make port. In Portuguese the name means red dog, but where it comes from is not clear.
The Douro is a warm valley in northern Portugal with slate slopes. Fortified wines are traditionally made here: wine spirit is added to the fermenting wine, and sugar stays in it. This is how port is made. Tinta Cão plays the role of a grape with good acidity and a delicate aroma, so it is valued for freshness and for its ability to age.
The grape is also used in still red wines of the Douro, and in the Dão region. It gives a small crop, so it is not planted very widely. Crossings of it produced, for example, the grape Rubired.
Tinta Cão is one of the traditional Portuguese grapes and is worth knowing for anyone interested in port.
