Terre Siciliane are local wines with a protected geographical indication (IGT/PGI) made across the whole of Sicily, the island in southern Italy. The name “Lands of Sicily” covers the entire island, so it is broader than the names of individual areas such as Etna or Marsala.
Red, white and rosé wines are made under this name, as well as sparkling ones. The rules are softer than for wines with a protected designation of origin. Both local grapes, such as Nero d’Avola, Grillo, Catarratto and Nerello Mascalese, and international ones, such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, may be used. The label often shows the grape variety.
Sicily is sunny and warm, with a sea breeze. The wines are ripe, aromatic and often soft. Terre Siciliane suits producers who want freedom and buyers who want simple, affordable wine.
Terre Siciliane belongs to Italian wine, like other IGTs. It is a broad “umbrella” category. Alcohol is for adults.
