Grape variety βœ” Checked: 10.2026 Β· sources: 4

A white wine grape of Sicily, one of the most widespread in Italy.

Catarratto is a white wine grape of Sicily, one of the most widely planted in Italy. It is grown mostly in the west of the island, near Marsala, Alcamo and Monreale.

The grape gives fresh wines with high acidity and a modest aroma, with notes of citrus and almond. It likes heat and tolerates drought well, so it suits the Sicilian climate. High-yielding vines give a lot of grapes, and for a long time it made simple bulk wine or material for blends.

Catarratto is used for the fortified wine Marsala and for the white wines of the Alcamo and Monreale zones, as well as the volcanic slopes of Etna. Today winemakers also get more serious dry wines from it, especially from high-altitude sites.

Catarratto has related varieties: Garganega, Mantonico Bianco and Grillo. This shows how old and important it was for Italian winemaking.
