🏷️ VDP Grosse Lage
The top VDP level: Germany's best sites, like a grand cru.
Grosse Lage is the top step of the classification of the German winemakers' association VDP. It is the name for the best vineyards in Germany. The name means "great site". It is roughly the same as grand cru in France.
The VDP system has four steps: estate wine, village wine, first site wine and Grosse Lage wine. Grosse Lage is the top. Vineyards are selected by soil, exposure and history. The rules are strict: yields are limited, grapes are picked by hand, and only grape varieties traditional for the place are allowed.
A dry wine from a Grosse Lage is called Grosses Gewächs. Sweet versions exist too. Such wines are usually aged longer, are complex and keep well. The VDP classification should not be confused with the state system: it is the rules of a producers' association. Grosse Lage wines are often sought by fans of German Riesling. The price is higher, but the taste is usually noticeably more complex.
