📜 Volnay
A Côte de Beaune village known for elegant red wines from Pinot Noir.
Volnay is a village in the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy, known for elegant red wines from Pinot Noir. The name is protected as a protected designation of origin (PDO) of the European Union and is listed in the eAmbrosia register. The village stands on a slope just south of Pommard.
The main feature of Volnay wines is lightness and finesse. They smell of red berries, violets and spice, the tannins are soft, and the texture is silky. This is what sets them apart from the fuller wines of their neighbours. All wines under this name are still, meaning without bubbles.
Volnay has no grand cru, but many premier cru plots. They are regarded as some of the best in the Côte de Beaune. So the label often shows the name of the plot, not only the village.
Volnay shows how in Burgundy the place decides the taste: each hill and each village gives its own style. As with any alcohol, the wine should be drunk in moderation.
