📜 Corton
The only red grand cru of the Côte de Beaune, on the hill by the village of Aloxe-Corton.
Corton is a protected appellation in France and the only red grand cru of the Côte de Beaune. It lies on a hill by the village of Aloxe-Corton in Burgundy. Grand cru is the top level of the Burgundy classification, used for the best plots.
Mostly red wine is made here from Pinot Noir. The wines are full, deep and tannic, and they develop with the years and can keep for a long time. The hill's slopes differ in angle and soil, so wines from different parts vary a little. A white wine from Chardonnay is also made, but red usually dominates.
Corton belongs to the Côte de Beaune, the southern part of Burgundy's Golden Slope. The wine is still, without bubbles. The red goes well with game, beef and aged cheese. Like all Burgundy grands crus, it is expensive, and rare plots cost still more. The best time to taste it is five to ten years after the vintage.
