Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5

A red grape from Spain, where it is called Garnacha; the base of many wines in southern France.

Grenache is a red grape from Spain, where it is called Garnacha. It is one of the most widely planted red grapes in the world. It likes heat and dry climates, so it grows in southern France, Spain, Sardinia (where it is called Cannonau) and other warm places.

The berries are large with thin skins. The wine is warm and soft, with the aroma of red berries, raspberry, herbs and spice, low acidity and high alcohol. It is the base of many blends: Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône, Priorat and Aragon in Spain. Rosé and fortified wines are also made from it.

Grenache has light-skinned forms: Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris. It has many descendants. Crossed with other grapes it has given, for example, Alicante Bouschet, Marselan and Portan.

Grenache blends well with Syrah and Mourvèdre, forming the classic southern Rhône blend. It is one of the most important grapes for the wines of southern France.
