🍇 Macabeo
A white Spanish grape, also called Viura; the base of white Rioja and sparkling cava.
Macabeo is a white grape from Spain. In Rioja it is called Viura. It is one of the most widely planted white grapes in the country. It also grows in France, in Roussillon.
The grape gives fresh wines with moderate acidity and the aroma of citrus, flowers and green apple. It resists oxidation, so its wines stay fresh for a long time. In youth they are light, and after barrel ageing they become fuller.
The main role of Macabeo is in the sparkling wine Cava in Catalonia, in the Penedès and Conca de Barberà areas. There it goes into a blend with other local grapes. In Rioja, Viura makes white wines, including barrel-aged ones.
Macabeo is an example of one variety with several names in different regions. For Spanish and Catalan wine it is the basis of white wines.
