🍷 Barrel hoop
An iron ring that holds the barrel staves together.
A barrel hoop is an iron ring that binds the staves of a barrel. Staves are the curved boards from which a barrel is built, most often oak. Without hoops the boards would fall apart. The hoops press them tightly against each other, so the barrel holds liquid.
The barrel is built by a cooper. He stands the staves in a circle, heats them to make the wood flexible, and drives the hoops on with a hammer and a special tool. Once the hoops are on, the barrel is strong. There are usually several hoops: on the narrower parts near the heads and on the wider part in the middle.
Modern hoops are made of steel. In the past wooden ones were used too, made of flexible shoots of chestnut or willow. Sometimes old barrels show rust, which is normal. Hoops are tightened if the wood has dried out.
A barrel with hoops is the main image of wine ageing. Wine matures in such a barrel, while a little air passes gently through the wood.
