Birkel
German pasta brand founded in 1874 in Schorndorf and now run by Newlat GmbH in Mannheim: egg pasta, high-protein, wholegrain and gluten-free ranges.
Birkel is a German pasta brand whose history begins in 1874, when Balthasar Birkel opened a flour and produce trading business in Schorndorf. Around 1902 his son Carl began selling noodles in marked cartons, the origin of the first brand, "Viktoria". In 1909 the factory moved from Schorndorf to Endersbach, and in 1932 the 7 Hühnchen brand was introduced. The first fully automatic noodle line was developed in 1949 and fully automatic production followed in 1957. In 1980 Birkel took over a plant in Mannheim, which later became its main site; the MINUTO instant cups appeared in 1981.
The company was sold to Danone in 1990. A management buy-out in 1999 made it independent again, Ebro Foods took over in 2007, and on 1 January 2014 the Italian Newlat Group became the owner. The company was renamed Newlat GmbH and its headquarters moved to Mannheim.
Birkel's pasta ranges are Birkel's No.1 (fresh-egg noodles, including Schwäbische Spätzle g.g.A.), 7 Hühnchen (egg noodles), High Protein, Nudel Inspiration (including wholegrain spirals) and Birkel Glutenfrei. According to the product pages, Birkel's No.1 spaghetti is made from durum wheat semolina and 10% fresh egg, 7 Hühnchen spaghetti from durum wheat semolina, wheat flour and 10% whole egg, and the gluten-free pasta from corn flour, rice flour and potato starch. Under the name MINUTO the brand also offers instant snacks and pasta kits.
