A sandy plain that makes the most wine by volume.

Danube (Great Plain, Alföld) is a wine area of Hungary on the Great Hungarian Plain between the Danube and the Tisza. It is a sandy plain that produces the most wine by volume.

The area includes the zones of Kunság, Hajós-Baja and Csongrád, as well as the stretch between the Danube and the Tisza and Monor. The soils are sandy and of low fertility, so the vines do not grow too vigorously. Sand warms up well and holds water poorly. Both local grapes, such as Kadarka and Cserszegi Fűszeres, and European ones, such as Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos), are grown. The wines come out light and affordable, often for everyday drinking.

The scale is different from famous Tokaj, but the area supplies the bulk of Hungarian wine. It belongs to Hungarian wine and includes a whole series of wine zones. Hajós-Baja is known for reds and Csongrád for Kadarka. For locals it is everyday wine, and for enthusiasts it is a place to find rare old grapes. The flat landscape with sandy rises and vineyards differs from the country's hilly areas.
