📍 North Transdanubia
Hills between the Danube and the Austrian border.
North Transdanubia is a wine area in north-western Hungary, hills between the Danube and the Austrian border. It is cooler here than in most of the country, so the wines are fresh. The region includes the subareas Etyek-Buda, Mór, Neszmély, Pannonhalma and Sopron, as well as Kőszeg.
Etyek-Buda lies near Budapest and is known for whites and sparkling wines from Chardonnay. Mór is famous for the Ezerjó grape, which gives dry whites with bright acidity. Pannonhalma has an ancient Benedictine abbey where wine has been made for centuries. Sopron, on the Austrian border, is famous for reds from Blaufränkisch, called Kékfrankos in Hungary.
North Transdanubia is part of Hungarian wine. Its vineyards are influenced by Lake Neusiedl and the Danube, which soften the climate. The area is less known than Tokaj but is interesting for lovers of fresh whites and light reds. Old traditions survive here, and many estates continue the family business.
