🍇 Kadarka
A red grape of Hungary and the Balkans that makes light, spicy wines.
Kadarka is a red grape from Hungary and the Balkans. It makes light, spicy wines. The vine is fussy, ripens late, and the berries have thin skins.
In Hungary Kadarka is grown in Szekszárd, Eger, Villány, Csongrád and in the Danube area on the Great Plain. It is also grown in Serbia (Subotica, Palić), in Romania and Bulgaria, and in Zakarpattia in Ukraine near Berehove. The colour of the wine is usually lighter than in other reds. Notes of red berries and pepper can be found in it.
Kadarka has been used to breed new varieties, among them Bíbor Kadarka. In recent years interest in it has returned: producers want to bring back the grape's former fame. It is a local variety, and its wines reflect the place where it grows. They go well with meat dishes and spicy food. Kadarka belongs to Hungarian wine but links several countries.
