A district with Hajós, a village of wine cellars.
Hajós-Baja is a wine district in southern Hungary, on the left bank of the Danube between the Danube and the Tisza, near the border with Serbia. It is part of the Danube wine region. The district unites 17 settlements, including the towns of Baja and Hajós. The district received the name Hajós-Baja in 1998, when it separated from the Great Plain wine area.
The natural setting is the southern part of the Danube plain and the sandy lands of Bačka; the soils are loess and humus sand, and the climate is sub-Mediterranean. In hours of sunshine the district leads Hungary. There are about 1,700 hectares of vineyards, out of a district area of a little over 2,000 hectares.
Growers plant Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos), Cabernet Sauvignon and other red and white grapes. The wines come out sunny and fruity.
The best-known landmark is the village of Hajós, with more than 1,200 traditional press houses and wine cellars built in rows. Every year the feast of Saint Urban, patron of grape growers and winemakers, is celebrated here, drawing tens of thousands of guests. To be precise, the district covers 2,066 hectares, of which 1,681 hectares are vineyards.
