Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2

A Hungarian spritzer; each ratio of wine to water has its own name.

Fröccs is the Hungarian spritzer: a mix of wine and soda water. It is a light, refreshing drink, especially popular in hot weather, at summer festivals and in cafés. It is drunk chilled, sometimes with ice.

In Hungary each ratio of wine to soda has its own name. The best known is kisfröccs: 100 millilitres of wine and 100 millilitres of soda water, that is, equal parts. Nagyfröccs has more wine and less water, and hosszúlépés the opposite, more water. There are other variants with funny names.

Ordinary dry wine, more often white, is used for fröccs. Hungarians call soda water szóda. The wine is diluted, so the drink is light. It is considered a popular, inexpensive drink.

Fröccs is part of Hungarian wine life. It suits those who want to drink less alcohol. But it too contains alcohol, so it must not be drunk before driving, and in hot weather it should be accompanied by plain water.
