The Hungarian word for sparkling wine.

Pezsgő is the Hungarian word for sparkling wine. Literally it means 'foaming' or 'bubbling'. In Hungary it covers any wine with bubbles, from simple to very expensive.

Hungary has made sparkling wine for a long time. In 1882 József Törley, who had worked in Champagne, started production in Budafok near Budapest. Large cellars where bottles mature are still in use there.

Hungarian pezsgő is made in two ways. The best wines use the traditional method, with fermentation in the bottle. Mass-market ones are made in large closed tanks, which is faster and cheaper.

Both local and international grapes are used: Furmint, Olaszrizling, Királyleányka, Irsai Olivér, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Tokaj has sparkling wines from Furmint. Pezsgő ranges from brut to sweet, white and rosé. The word is part of Hungarian wine and the local name for the large family of sparkling wines.
