🍇 Garnacha Roja

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2

A grey mutation of Grenache, called Grenache Gris in France.

Garnacha Roja is a light-skinned form of the well-known Grenache grape. It is a grey mutation: ordinary Garnacha has dark berries, while this one has greyish-pink ones. In France it is called Grenache Gris.

The variety comes from Spain. It is grown in Catalonia and, across the Pyrenees in France, in Roussillon. White and rosé wines are made from it, sometimes sweet ones too. The wines are full-bodied and warm, with the aroma of ripe fruit and herbs and moderate acidity.

Garnacha Roja is close to the other forms of Grenache: dark Garnacha and white Garnacha. By origin it is the same variety whose berry colour changed over time. Such changes are called mutations, and they happen to vines by themselves.

It has also been used in breeding new varieties, for example Symphony.
