🥃 Glen Grant 12 Year Old
12-year version of the Glen Grant Speyside single malt; 40% ABV according to Difford's Guide; bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks.
Glen Grant 12 Year Old is the 12-year version of the single malt from Glen Grant, distilled at Rothes in Speyside, and it is often taken as the middle step of the range. Difford's Guide gives the strength as 40% ABV and notes that the new design appeared in June 2016. The official website describes the nose as honey and pear.
Maturation. According to the official website, the whisky matures in carefully selected bourbon barrels and in Oloroso sherry casks. Difford's Guide does not name the casks. The whisky is made from malted barley and distilled in tall, slender copper stills with water-jacket condensers, which visitors can see at the distillery.
Why this matters for you. Compare this version with Glen Grant 10 Year Old to taste the difference of two years, and with Glen Grant 15 Year Old, which has a higher strength. The age on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle; check the strength and casks on the label itself. There is also a separate 12-year-old bottling without chill filtration, so do not confuse the two. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
