🌿 Gobelet (bush vine)

Viticulture ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2 Updated:

A vine without support, shaped like a low bush or cup, an old Mediterranean method.

The gobelet bush is a vine without a support, trained as a low cup-shaped bush. It is an old Mediterranean method. The name comes from the French word gobelet, meaning goblet: the bush looks like a cup or bowl.

What does it look like? The vine is not tied to wire and no trellis is put up. From a short trunk several arms grow in different directions, each with one or two short shoots. The whole bush stands by itself, not high above the ground. Rows are often planted widely, and work between them is done by hand.

Why is it done this way? In hot, dry places a low bush protects the berries from the burning sun: the leaves give shade. The roots go deep and take water from the soil, so such a bush copes well with drought. Pruning of the vine here is short, and the harvest is by hand.

A similar method is used on the island of Pantelleria, where vines are grown in pits. Gobelet is liked in hot lands, but in modern vineyards it is replaced by the trellis, where machines can work.
