Low bush vines in hollows sheltered from the wind on an Italian island; UNESCO heritage.

The viticulture of Pantelleria is a special way of growing vines on the Italian island of Pantelleria, between Sicily and Tunisia. It is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.

The island has strong winds and little water. So vines are trained as low bushes called "alberello". Each bush is planted in a shallow pit, so the wind does not tear the shoots and moisture stays near the roots. The island's slopes are divided by stone terraces, also built by hand. Work on such plots is almost entirely manual.

This method resembles the goblet (gobelet) bush known in other places. The island's main grape is Zibibbo, which is Muscat of Alexandria, also used for sweet wines. The tradition is passed down in grower families and kept as a living practice, not a museum piece. The island makes both dry and sweet wines from Zibibbo, and grapes for the sweet ones are often dried in the sun.
