🍇 Gros Manseng
A white grape of Béarn and Gascony, used in dry and sweet Jurançon wines.
Gros Manseng is a white grape from south-west France, from Béarn and Gascony. It comes from the foothills of the Pyrenees. It makes dry and sweet wines, for example the famous white wines of Jurançon.
Gros Manseng has larger berries than its relative Petit Manseng, and it is less demanding. The berries are thick-skinned and firm, with sharp juice. Yields are good. The wine is fresh, with aromas of citrus, pineapple, herbs and exotic fruit. If the grapes are dried on the vine, sweet wines result.
The variety matters for several appellations: Jurançon, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh, Irouléguy, Saint-Mont and Côtes de Gascogne. Gros Manseng is in the list of grape varieties and tied to French wine. It grows in Gascony and the Pyrenean foothills (Béarn and the Basque Country). It is often used in blends with other local varieties. Such wines go well with fish, seafood and cheese.
