Dry and sweet Manseng whites at the foot of the Pyrenees, near Pau.

Jurançon is an appellation in south-western France, at the foot of the Pyrenees, near the city of Pau. It lies in the historic area of Béarn. The name is protected as a PDO. White wines, both dry and sweet, are made here, all still.

The main grapes are Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng. Petit Manseng has small berries and high acidity, while Gros Manseng has larger berries and is lighter. Courbu and Lauzet are also used. The grapes are left to shrivel on the vine into late autumn. The berries become wrinkled and sweet, and the famous sweet wines come from them.

Sweet Jurançon differs from most others: despite high sweetness it has fresh acidity, with notes of tropical fruit, honey and spice. Dry wines are fresh, with citrus and floral notes.

The vineyards lie on slopes facing the mountains, and the view of the Pyrenees is their calling card. Sweet wine is served with foie gras, blue cheeses and desserts, and dry wine with fish.
