🥃 Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking Pride
18-year-old Highland Park expression: 43 % ABV; produced since 1997; the name Viking Pride dates from 2017.
Highland Park 18 Year Old Viking Pride is an 18-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from Highland Park, produced in Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands. Its strength is 43 % ABV. According to Difford's Guide, the version was launched in 1997, and it received the name Viking Pride in 2017 together with new packaging.
According to Whiskypedia, since 2004 Highland Park has matured its whisky only in sherry casks of European and American oak. Part of the malt is dried over heather peat, so the smoke is moderate. The round bottle was replaced by an oval one in 2006, and in 2017 an embossed glass appeared; according to SLTN the whisky itself was not changed. Whisky Magazine classes it among island whiskies, although by law Orkney belongs to the Highland region.
Why this matters to you. Compared with Highland Park 12 Year Old Viking Honour this means six extra years of maturation and a higher strength; next to it stands Highland Park 15 Year Old Viking Heart. The Macallan, which has the same owner, Edrington, takes a similar sherry-based approach. The WHO reminds us: there is no safe dose of alcohol.
