🥃 Balblair 15 Year Old
Balblair 15 Year Old: first matured in ex-bourbon casks, then finished in first-fill Spanish oak sherry casks; 46% ABV.
Balblair 15 Year Old is the middle expression of Balblair's permanent age-statement range, launched in 2019. It differs from the 12-year-old not only in age but also in its sherry finish. Strength is 46% ABV, according to Scotchwhisky.com and The Whiskey Wash. A reviewer at The Whiskey Wash named it the best in the range.
According to Scotchwhisky.com, the whisky first matures in ex-bourbon American oak casks and then moves to first-fill Spanish oak sherry butts. Sherry adds dark fruit and chocolate; Scotchwhisky.com describes the taste as dark chocolate, tropical fruit and creamy vanilla. The malt and distillation are the same as for the rest of the range.
Why it matters to you. Balblair 18 Year Old uses the same cask pattern but a longer maturation, while Balblair 12 Year Old has no sherry at all. So the 15-year-old is the shortest route to the sherry side of the distillery. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
