Luzhou Laojiao is a Chinese company and brand of strong-aroma baijiu from the city of Luzhou in Sichuan province. Its main brands are National Cellar 1573 (Guojiao 1573) and Luzhou Laojiao itself. The company says the cellars it uses date back to 1573.

History. The joint-stock company Luzhou Laojiao Co., Ltd. was founded on 20 September 1993 and has been listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange since 9 May 1994. Its largest shareholder is Luzhou Laojiao Group Co., Ltd., with 26.05% of the shares as of 30 June 2026.

Cellars. In 1996 the State Council recognised the 1573 cellars as a key national historical and cultural relic, the first of their kind. In March 2013 the company was recognised again for 1619 cellars over a century old, 16 traditional brewing workshops and 3 natural storage caverns. The traditional brewing technique of aromatic baijiu was recognised as national cultural heritage in May 2006.

Brands and standard. The company describes its baijiu ranges as a pyramid: National Cellar 1573 at the top, Cellar-Aged Luzhou Laojiao and Tequ in the middle, and Touqu and Erqu at the base. For Luzhou Laojiao Tequ the Chinese national standard GB/T 22045-2008 (a geographical indication product) applies; it was issued on 25 June 2008 and has been in force since 1 October 2008.

Reading the label. Luzhou Laojiao is both a company and a single brand, so read the label carefully: National Cellar 1573 and Tequ are different levels. The WHO states that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for health.
