Brandy brand from Trieste, founded in 1884 by Lionello Stock and Carlo Camis; its best-known version is Stock 84; today it belongs to Stock Spirits Group.

Stock is a brandy brand from Trieste; its best-known version is Stock 84. The business was founded by Lionello Stock and Carlo Camis: on 26 December 1884 their steam distillery Camis & Stock started work. Today the brand belongs to Stock Spirits Group, which has been controlled by the investment firm CVC Capital Partners since November 2021.

History. Lionello Stock was born in 1866 in Split and started with 2,000 florins borrowed from his father. The idea came from phylloxera: French producers lacked wine, so Stock began distilling Dalmatian wines locally. The first flagship was 'Cognac Stock Medicinal', which sold widely in Austria-Hungary.

From cognac to brandy. In 1935 the '1884 Cognac Fine Champagne' appeared. After 1947, when the word 'cognac' was reserved for drinks from the French region of Cognac, the drink was renamed Brandy Stock 84 in 1955. From 1957 the brand appeared in the Italian television programme Carosello.

Owners. In 1995 the German company Eckes AG bought Stock Italia; in 2008 it became Stock Spirits Group, and in 2012 production moved from Trieste to the Czech Republic. Stock 84 remains one of the group's key brands, including in Poland.

Why it matters to you. Stock 84 is a brandy, not a cognac, although it once had that name. Under EU rules, brandy must have at least 36% ABV and be aged in oak for six months to a year, depending on cask size. Look for the place of bottling on the label. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
