🍇 Marsanne
A white wine grape from the northern Rhône that makes full-bodied wines.
Marsanne is a white wine grape from the northern part of the Rhône Valley in France. It gives full-bodied wines: dense, oily, with notes of almond, pear, honey and flowers. Acidity is moderate, so the wine seems soft and round.
The main home of the grape is the northern Rhône. It is at the base of the white wines of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Saint-Péray. It is often blended with another white grape, Roussanne: Marsanne gives density and body, while Roussanne gives aroma and freshness. Such a blend is usual in the region.
The grape has travelled far beyond France. In Australia, in the state of Victoria, grow some of the oldest Marsanne vines in the world. It is also planted in other warm countries. In France it is found as well in Cassis on the coast.
The grape belongs to the general list of grape varieties and to French wine. Good white wines from Marsanne can age for many years.
