🍇 Clairette Blanche
An old white grape of southern France, used for the sparkling Clairette de Die.
Clairette Blanche is an old white grape of southern France. It is grown in Languedoc and in the Rhône Valley, where it has been known for centuries.
The grape makes dry white wines that can be delicate yet fairly strong, with modest acidity and the aroma of flowers and herbs. It is often blended with other grapes, for example in Rhône white wines.
A special role of the variety is sparkling wine. In the town of Die in the Rhône Valley it is made into Clairette de Die, a sparkling wine. It is prepared by a special method in which fermentation happens in the bottle and the gas stays inside, as in the ancestral method.
The variety has a pink form, Clairette Rose. This is an example of a mutation in which a vine's berries change colour. Clairette Blanche stands beside other old varieties of southern France that travelled a long road together with local winemaking.
