🍇 Clairette
A white grape from southern France, known for sparkling Clairette de Die.
Clairette is a white grape from the south of France. It is known for the sparkling wine Clairette de Die from the Rhône valley.
The grape grows in Languedoc, Provence and the Rhône valley. It makes Clairette du Languedoc and Clairette de Bellegarde and is part of blends in Bandol, Cassis and Palette. In the Die area (Drôme) it makes the sparkling Clairette de Die and Crémant de Die, and on the slopes of Coteaux de Die still wines. Clairette wines can be fresh and light, sometimes with floral notes and soft acidity.
The grape likes heat and a dry climate. The wine tends to oxidise quickly, so it is best drunk young. Clairette is one of the old local grapes of southern France and has long been used. It goes well with seafood and light appetisers. For sparkling wines from Die it is sometimes blended with Muscat. It is an example of one grape taking part in wines of different styles, from dry white to sparkling.
