📜 Crozes-Hermitage
The largest northern Rhône appellation, around the hill of Hermitage, with reds from Syrah.
Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation of the northern Rhône, in south-eastern France. The vineyards surround the Hermitage hill. The name is protected as a PDO. Mostly red wines are made here from Syrah, and in small volumes white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne.
The northern Rhône is known for steep slopes above the river, often terraced. Crozes-Hermitage lies around the famous hill, but the soils are more varied here, and the wines are simpler than Hermitage itself. The reds usually show black berries and pepper, are soft, and can be drunk relatively young.
The white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne are rich and aromatic, with shades of pear and flowers. Not many are produced.
The appellation is large in area and volume, so quality inside it varies. For the buyer it is a convenient way to meet northern Rhône wine at a reasonable price before trying the region's more expensive names.
