🍇 Viognier
An aromatic white grape from the northern Rhône, famous for Condrieu.
Viognier is an aromatic white grape from the north of the Rhône Valley in France. It is known for the wine Condrieu and the Château-Grillet vineyard. The wines smell of apricot, peach and flowers and have a soft, oily texture with low acidity.
In the 1960s the variety nearly disappeared: very little was left in its home area. Interest later returned, and Viognier was planted in other places: in Languedoc, the southern Rhône (Côtes du Rhône) and outside France. In the northern Rhône, a little Viognier may be added to the red wine Côte-Rôtie together with Syrah, which adds aroma.
The variety is tied to French wine, to the Rhône Valley and to Languedoc. It is part of Collines Rhodaniennes, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Côtes du Rhône and Duché d'Uzès, as well as Vallegarcía in Spain. Viognier is usually served cool, with fish, poultry and soft cheeses.
