🥃 McDowell's No.1
Indian blended brand sold as whisky (IMFL) since 1968; Scotch, Indian malt and grain spirit; owned by United Spirits (Diageo).
McDowell's No.1 is an Indian spirits brand, best known for its whisky. It has been produced since 1968 by United Spirits, the Indian subsidiary of Diageo. It is a blend of imported Scotch whisky, Indian malt whiskies and grain spirit. At over 30 million cases a year, it is one of the largest brands in the world.
History. The company traces its roots to the Scotsman Angus McDowell, who opened a warehouse near Fort St George in Madras, now Chennai, in 1826. Under the No.1 name a brandy came first, in 1963-1964, and the whisky in 1968; rum was added later. Diageo gained control of United Spirits in 2014.
How it is made. According to The Whiskey Wash, the first whisky of 1968 was blended from imported Scotch and Indian malt whiskies. In the wider IMFL category, meaning Indian-made foreign liquor, spirit based on molasses is often used. In 2026 Diageo India updated the blend: the share of Scotch malt was raised by 30%, and the bottle and label were changed.
Range. Besides whisky, the brand includes brandy and rum; there are Original and Luxury versions, and in 2024 a limited Indian single malt whisky was released.
Why this matters to you. In the EU, whisky must be made only from grain and aged at least three years, and the composition of Indian blends can differ from this. So the word whisky on a McDowell's label does not guarantee compliance with the European definition. Check the composition and strength. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
