🥃 Royal Challenge Whisky
The main Royal Challenge version: Scotch whisky, Indian malt and grain spirits; 42.8% ABV; made by United Spirits (Diageo).
Royal Challenge Whisky is the main version of the Indian whisky brand Royal Challenge, made by United Spirits, a Diageo subsidiary. It is the one people mean when they simply say “RC”. According to the listing of the Canadian retailer LCBO, its strength is 42.8% ABV; no age is stated on the label.
Diageo India describes the recipe as a blend of Scotch whisky, Indian malt and grain spirits, aged in charred American oak casks. In 2026, according to Reuters, India's regulator FSSAI called the maturation claim on the label misleading, because most of the spirit is not aged. Diageo India said it is cooperating with the regulator on labelling.
Why it matters. This is the starting point of the brand: compare it with Royal Challenge American Pride, where bourbon replaces the Scotch. Keep in mind that this blend is not Scotch whisky, and in the EU a drink with neutral spirit does not automatically fall under the “whisky” category. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.
