🍇 Mencía
A red Spanish grape from the north-west, known for the wines of Bierzo.
Mencía is a red grape from north-west Spain. It is best known for the wines of Bierzo, in the province of León, in Castile and León. It also grows in Galicia, in Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras and Monterrei, and in Portugal, where it is known as Jaen in the Dão region.
Wines from Mencía are usually red, with bright berry notes and freshness. They range from light young wines to more serious ones aged in oak. The acidity helps them go with food.
The grape likes slopes with slate and stony soils. Old vines and a rugged landscape give small crops, but the wines are more expressive. That is why many people in Bierzo prize the old plots.
In its pedigree Mencía is linked to the grapes Alfrocheiro and Patorra. It is one of Spain's red grapes and helps explain the variety of the wine-growing north-west.
