A mountain basin on the way into Galicia.

Bierzo is a mountain basin in north-western Spain, in the province of León, within Castile and León. It is a transition zone between dry central Spain and green Galicia: mountains shelter the valley from Atlantic winds, yet rain falls more often than on the plateau. The zone belongs to Castile and León.

The main red grape is Mencía, giving bright wines with red-berry, violet and spice aromas, often with mineral notes. The best wines come from slopes with slate soils and from old vines. Whites are made from Godello and Doña Blanca: Godello gives structured wines with good acidity, and Doña Blanca lighter ones.

Bierzo became known in recent decades: interest in Mencía and Godello grew, and old vineyards once thought of little value won recognition. Rosé wines are made too.

The area suits anyone looking for fresh reds without heavy tannins and distinctive whites. Neighbouring Ribeira Sacra in Galicia works with the same grapes, while Bierzo lies closer to León. White Godello pairs well with fish, and red Mencía with poultry, cured sausages and grilled meat.
