π Godello
A white grape from Galicia, Spain, giving both fresh and aged wines.
Godello is a white grape from Galicia, in north-west Spain. Its wines are fresh, with good acidity. They can also age and become deeper over the years.
The main places where it grows are Valdeorras, Bierzo, Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra. All of them are in Galicia or next to it. It is cooler and wetter here than in the south of Spain, and this climate suits the grape.
Some of the places where it grows are also separate sub-regions, such as Monterrei.
Godello makes both simple young wines and more serious ones that ferment or mature in oak. As with any grape, the style depends on the soil and the winemaker's choices. For a grower the grape is interesting because it reflects its site well: on stony and slate slopes the wines turn out clearly different.
