🍇 Pearl of Csaba
An early table grape from Hungary with a light Muscat aroma.
Pearl of Csaba is an early table grape from Hungary. Its berries are eaten fresh. They have a light muscat aroma and are sweet and juicy. In Hungarian the name is Csabagyöngye, after the town of Csaba.
The grape ripens very early, already in July or early August, when other varieties are still green. It is prized for this: it is one of the first to appear on the table. The bunches are medium, and the berries are pale green or golden. The grape is undemanding and suits small gardens and plots.
Pearl of Csaba is also important as a parent of other varieties. Pedigrees linked to it mention Queen of the Vineyards, Mireille, Vrbovska, Plevenski Muscat, Zala Pearl and Pearl Riesling. Among related varieties are Madeleine Angevine, Muscat Fleur d'Oranger and Thracian Muscat.
Although wine can be made from it, it is grown mainly for fresh berries. It is an example of grapes being needed not only by winemakers.
