📍 Peloponnese
The country's largest wine peninsula.
The Peloponnese is a large peninsula in the south of mainland Greece and one of the country's main wine areas. It is part of Greek wine. The places here are very different, from mountain plateaus to a coast with hot summers, so the wines come out varied.
The best-known districts of the peninsula are Nemea, Mantinia, Patras and Monemvasia. Nemea is the home of the red grape Agiorgitiko ("St George's grape"): it gives soft, fruity reds of many styles. Mantinia is known for white wines from Moschofilero, an aromatic pinkish grape. Patras makes whites from Roditis, as well as sweet wines, Mavrodaphne and Muscat of Patras. Monemvasia is linked with Malvasia: wines from there were exported to northern Europe in the Middle Ages.
There are other wine areas too: Arcadia, Achaea, Corinth, Laconia, Messenia, Pylia, Trifylia, Klimenti, Pisatis, Argolida, Elis, Letrini and Tegea. The grapes include Agiorgitiko, Black Corinth, Roditis, Moschofilero, Lagorthi and Mavrodaphne.
The Peloponnese is one of the best addresses for getting to know Greek wine: ancient temples, the sea and mountains lie side by side. Mavrodaphne is a dark grape from which sweet fortified wines are made in Patras.
