Northern Greece, home of Xinomavro.

Macedonia is a historic area in northern Greece and the country's main red-wine zone. It has mountains, lakes, fertile plains and the coast of the Aegean Sea. The climate is transitional: warm by the sea, cool in the mountains, with snow in winter. Its centre is the city of Thessaloniki.

The best-known grape of Macedonia is Xinomavro (“sour black”), a red grape giving wines with high acidity, tannins and scents of red berries, olives and spice. The best of these are Naoussa, Amyndeon and Goumenissa. Naoussa makes serious wines that age well. In Amyndeon, at about 600 to 700 metres, Xinomavro goes into rosé and sparkling wines. White grapes include Malagousia, Assyrtiko and others.

Macedonia includes zones such as Halkidiki, Drama, Imathia, Pella, Pieria, Florina, Kavala, Serres and the island of Thasos. Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain, where monks have made wine for many centuries, also lies here. In recent decades many wineries have been making modern wines of international standard.

For comparison with its neighbours: to the south lies Thessaly with Mount Olympus, to the east Thrace, and to the north across the border North Macedonia and Bulgaria.
