The country's north-east, next to Turkey.

Thrace is a wine area in north-eastern Greece, along the border with Türkiye, from the Rhodope mountains to the Aegean coast. It is part of Greek winemaking. Known places include Avdira, Evros and Ismaros. The area is tied to ancient Thrace, where wine was made already in antiquity.

Homer's Odyssey speaks of Thracian wine: the hero receives strong wine from Ismaros from the priest Maron. The name Ismaros is still carried by wines of this area today.

The climate is mixed: Mediterranean near the coast, more continental inland. Both international and local grapes are grown. Wines are red, white and rosé, mostly regional (PGI), without strict appellation rules.

The area is small and its wine seldom travels, but interest is growing: producers revive forgotten local grapes and aim for quality. West of the area lies Macedonia with better-known zones, and the Turkish border runs to the east. Thracian wines are best tasted on the spot at small estates, with fish from the Aegean Sea and local cheese.
